Description

Compilation of OSC RGB and IR images of Mar from the evening of December 29, 2020 (Dec. 30th in UTC). Seeing transparency were both average on this night. Mars was showing a disc just over 10 arcsecs in diameter (89% illuminated) at magnitude of -0.3. The dark albedo feature near the equator and to the left of the meridian is Mare Cimmerium and to the right is Mare Sirenum. The northern polar hood is still just visible, but I was unable to capture the now diminished south polar cap.

This was my final imaging session of the 2020 Mars apparition. What a treat it was to have Mars so high in the sky this apparition. And what wonderful counterpoint the timelessness and beauty of the brilliant march of Mars high across the sky made to all the troubles we face in the world today. The universe continues on...
